The Bicol Consortium for Health Research and Development (BCHRD) spearheaded the Research Proposal Writeshop last November 5-6, 2015 at the Manhattan Beach Resort, Calayucay, Sto. Domingo, Albay. The objective of the said activity is to develop quality researches that will answer the health needs of the Bicolanos.

Participants were researchers with capsule proposals submitted to the consortium from different member agencies. Evaluators are from various disciplines from esteemed universities in the region. For day 1 of the writeshop (November 5, 2015), the activity was started with an invocation and the Pambansang Awit led by the BCHRD-Ethics Review Committee Secretary, Ms. Ma. Concepcion Maceres. Dr. Alma Banua, the consortium director, welcomed the guests and participants and introduced the consortium through an audio-visual presentation of the BCHRD and introduced the researchers and  Discussions by Dr. Lester Narvaez, the Assistant Director of Bicol University Research and Development Center and the alternate member of the BCHRD- Research and Development Committee on the Mechanics for presentation, criteria for evaluation of research proposals and the Technical and Administrative aspect followed. The research proposal format was also presented by Dr. Delia Oco, Dean of the Ateneo De Naga University College of Nursing to guide the participants in writing the proposal in the prescribed format. Dr. Alma Banua also announced available funding agencies willing to fund researches.

The participants were given two (2) hours to prepare for the presentation of the research proposals for evaluation in the afternoon.  There were 9 research proposals for evaluation and were given 45 minutes to 1 hour to be evaluated. The following researches were as follows:

1)      “ Evaluation of the Water Quality and Compliance to the P.D. 856- Code of Sanitation for Public Swimming Pools in the Province of Albay” by Prof. Carina Orden and Imee Dutullo of the Bicol University Tabaco Campus;

2)      “ Factors to Unsuccessful Pulmonary Tuberculosis Treatment Outcome in Region V” by Dr. Alma S. Banua of BU-BCHRD;

3)      “ An Evaluation of the Performance of LGU Masbate along MDG Health Service Delivery System Thrust: A baseline for SDG along God Health and Well-Being” by Dr. Ruby Ann Ayo, Dr. Salvacion Villafuerte, Dr. Sipronio Belardo (BU – CSSP) and Dr. Richard Bartolata of the BU- College of Nursing;

4)      “ Assessment and Ethnobotanical Survey of Medicinal Plants in Selected Areas in Region V” by Dr. Maria Teresa Mirandilla of Bicol University College of Science

5)      “Phytochemical Screening and Gastroprotective Activity Studies on Manihot esculenta crantz (Euphobiaceae) Leaves and Musa Balbisiana Peels Extract” by Prof. Dennis Gogola of BU-Tabaco Campus;

6)      “Ethno-Botanical Survey and Bioassay Investigation of Plants for Diabetes Used by Folk Healers In The Rural Areas Of Bicol Region “by Prof. Dennis Gogola of BU-Tabaco Campus;

7)      “Toxic Effect of Citrus aurantium (Dalandan), Citrus microcarpa bunge (Kalamansi) and Citrus grandis (Lukban) Peel Extract on Alloxan-induced Diabetic Male Albino Mice (mus musculus)”

8)       “Phytochemical Screening of A. Muricata L. And Histopathological Evaluation on the Effects of Its Saponin and Tannin Extracts on Sprague Dawley Rats” by Prof. Dennis Gogola of BU-Tabaco Campus;and

9)      “Oral Hypoglycemic Activity of Pleurotus florida in Normal and Alloxan-Induced Diabetic ICR Mice by Prof. Ofelia Tam of Partido State University.

All of the above-mentioned proposals were presented and were given comments and suggestions to be incorporated in the revisions.

For the second day of the writeshop, a recapitulation was given by Ms. Rina R. Llenaresas, Project Assistant II of the consortium. Dr. Sandy C. Lasa, the BCHRD Ethics Review Committee (ERC) Chairperson, discussed the Process Review for the Ethical Evaluation. She gave a review of the Basic Ethics principles to refresh the participants. She also have expounded the do’s and don’t’s in research in relation to ethical considerations. The ERC Forms for ethical review were also presented to the participants. An open forum was conducted to welcome the inquiries of participants with regards to the topics presented.

The comments were incorporated and were revised by the proponents for second review off the R& D Committee.
