INVITATION FOR NOMINATION
Keio University Medical Science Fund is now accepting nominations for the Keio Medical Science Prize 2015. Established in 1996, Keio University annually awards the Keio Medical Science Prize to recognize researchers who have made an outstanding contribution to the field of medicine or life sciences.
Keio Medical Science Prize 2015
Criteria
· Nominee must have a breakthrough in the fields of medicine and life sciences, and/or related fields.
· Nominee must have an outstanding contribution to basic and clinical medicine.
Selection
13 selection committee members and over 60 specialists from various fields, within and outside Keio University, will select laureates through rigorous review process.
Eligibility
Nominees must be currently active in their field of research, and be expected to make future contributions to the field.
Prize
Each laureate receives a certificate of merit, medal and a monetary award of 10 million yen.
Nomination
· Individuals are limited to one nomination each.
· Institutions or organizations may make as many nomination as they can.
· In case of multiple nominations, nominations are limited to One nominee per research theme.
Note: A nomination should be for one researcher. Keio University does not accept nominations for groups.

The Information and Education Campaign (IEC) of Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Balik Scientist Program (BSP) and other Human Resource Development Programs was hosted in the Bicol Region by the BCHRD on September 25, 2014 at Bicol University College of Nursing Function Hall, Legazpi City.
The activity was facilitated by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) and Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD) as part of the DOST’s celebration of the National Science and Technology Week, with the theme “Philippines: A Science Nation Meeting Global Challenges” which aimed to disseminate information on available DOST human resource development programs that would capacitate research institutions and universities, towards building a “Science Nation”.
Its objective is to strengthen the scientific and technological human resources of academic, public and private institutions in order to accelerate the flow of technologies and stimulates the development of new strategically important technologies that are vital to national development and progress.
The resource speakers were Ma.Belen Balbuena of PCHRD and Glenda Sacbibit of PCIERD who shared the Programs offered and the financial assistance provided, who are qualified to apply/avail the BSP, process for application, obligations and responsibilities of the parties (BSP and applicant). The activity was participated by the BCHRD and the PCIERD members, faculty members and staff from health agencies of Region V. DOST director Tomas Briñas was represented by Dr. Pilita Lucena for the opening remarks, while Dr. Fay Lea Patria M. Lauraya , SUC President IV and Chairperson of BCHRD, had delivered the closing remarks.

November 28, 2014 marks an important event in research and development in Region V. For the first time the Three (3) Bicol consortia namely: (1) Agricultural Resources Research and Development; (2) Industry and Energy Research and Development; and, (3) Health Research and Development holds one of the biggest events in the region, collaborated in undertaking the 2ndRegional Symposium on Research and Development Highlights (RSRDH) that was held at Bicol University College of Nursing, Function Hall, Legazpi City.
Its objective of the activity was to provide a platform for the different stakeholders in Research& Development in the region:to interact, share best practices, information and current trends in R&D that shall contribute tothe research-based solutions to problems in fisheries, forestry, education and health agriculture,aquatic, industry and energy and in health.
One of the highlights of the activity was the research presentation, both in oral and poster exhibit. That comprised of two categories: Student and Professional (R & D research and Graduate Studies).

The 14th Forum for Ethics Review Committees in the Asia and Western Pacific (FERCAP) International Conference and 1st Philippine Health Research Ethics Board National Conference 2014 was held last November 23 – 26, 2014 at Tagaytay Vista Hotel, Tagaytay City.With the theme, “Embedding Ethics in National Health Research Systems,” the conference highlighted the initiatives towards institutionalization of ethics within national systems and harmonization of good practices across the Asia Pacific region.
The objectives of the conference were to: (1) describe concepts, best practices, and initiatives towards embedding ethics in national health research systems; (2) highlight the use of a systems approach at the international, national and institutional levels to promote ethics in research among various research stakeholders; (3) identify gaps, facilitators and barriers to good ethical infrastructures; (4) suggest options and future directions of national research systems to maintain the highest ethical and scientific standards in health research; and, (5) develop relevant models of partnership and alliance building in ethical research that promotes empowerment of stakeholders within context of diverse Asian cultures and pluralistic socio-political systems.
The resource speakers were from international and national health authorities, ethics committees, researchers, academic institutions, and pharmaceutical industry. Among the topics discussed were: (1) Challenges and Issues in Health Research Regulations; (2) Empowerment of Research Participants; (3) Effective Governance in Health Research; (4) Models of Health Research Systems; (5) Role of Community Representatives in Research Ethics; (6) Conflict of Interests in Health Research; (7) Indicators of Ethical Health Research Systems; and (8) 2013 Helsinki and Health Research System.
The conference was attended by various sectors and disciplines involved in health research, mainly from Asia and the Western Pacific region. Among them were the delegates from BCHRD, namely Prof. Sandy Lasa of Universidad de Sta. Isabel, ERC Chair and two (2) ERC members- Dr. Aurora Daluro of the Department of Health and Dr. Richard Bartolata of the Bicol University. Likewise with the BCHRD participants were Ma. Theresa de Alban of the Commission on Higher EducationR5 and Prof. Dennis Gogola of Bicol University,
The conference contributed in increasing the participants’ awareness on the various ethical models and practices utilized to improve multidisciplinary health research systems.

BCHRD WELCOMES NICCDH AS NEW MEMBER OF THE CONSORTIUM
The primary objective of BCHRD is to institute/strengthen the system of collaboration in Bicol to develop and enhance the capacity of research institutions within the region which have interest and engage in health and related researches, as a strategy to improve the health conditions of the Bicolanos.
Aligned to the objective is the approval of the membership of having expressed their intent to be joined the consortium. he Regional Health Research Coordinating Council, the consortium's policy making body had approved the membership the NICCDH during RHRCC Meeting this March 20, 2014. As a new member they we be a part of the training offered by the consortium and are to submit proposals aligned with the research agenda of the region.
